Sakai City

Sakai City has established itself as a production centre for Japanese kitchen knives for professional chefs.
It is said that the origin of forged knives in this region can be traced back to the production of iron products such as agricultural tools and knives during the creation of ancient tombs in the 4th to 5th centuries.
On the other hand, the name Sakai kitchen knives spread in the late 16th century when a large number of knives for chopping tobacco leaves introduced from Portugal were made in Sakai. Because of their high quality, they received the seal of approval from the government as ‘Sakai-Kiwame’ (meaning ‘ultimate’) and spread throughout the country.
From that time onwards, kitchen knife production in Sakai was divided into the three processes of forging, sharpening and handle attachment, and the division of labour was fundamental.

Sakai kitchen knives, produced by craftsmen who have mastered their respective fields, boast a brilliant sharpness.
